Research Residency Program, Zermatt.

Since 2024, Bahay Contemporary has had the pleasure of offering an annual research residency program in Zermatt.

This residency, available by invitation only, provides artists with a secluded retreat in the mountains for two to four weeks, including private accommodation and a weekly stipend. Artists are encouraged to use this time to deepen their artistic inquiry, refine their creative processes, and advance their projects in a setting of natural beauty and quiet reflection.

Our inaugural artist-in-residence, Zurich-based Tetiana Kartasheva (b. 1989, Ukraine), joined us in August and September 2024. Tetiana’s practice investigates the intersection between the random order of nature and the rational precision of rhythm, pattern, and geometry. Inspired by organic silhouettes and structures encountered outdoors, her work often addresses ecological concerns, contemplating the complex relationship between humanity and the natural world, while also exploring their connection with metaphysical dimensions. Through her minimalist drawings, collages, paintings, and installations, Tetiana creates visually balanced, finely attuned compositions that embody the fragile equilibrium of our "planetary garden" and invite viewers to reconnect with a sense of inner peace.

Zermatt, home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna, offers a blooming paradise for nature lovers. We were thrilled to host Tetiana and witness how the unique endemic plants she encountered during her stay further enriched and inspired her artistic practice.
